Ilhavo is a Portuguese city in the Aveiro district and integrated into the Aveiro Region of the Central Region. The city has 10,838 inhabitants (2021) and is the seat of the Municipality of Ílhavo (which includes two cities, Ílhavo and Gafanha da Nazaré) with an area of 73.48 km² and 39,235 inhabitants (2021), divided into 4 parishes. The municipality is divided into three distinct areas by the arms of the Aveiro Lagoon, and is limited to the north and northeast by the municipality of Aveiro (land border to the northwest and through the lagoon to the north), and to the south by Vagos. Its origin lies in the Roman city of Illiabum.

The municipality received a charter from King D. Dinis on October 13, 1296, and was elevated to a city on July 13, 1990.

The city is famous for its Vista Alegre porcelain industry. The municipality of Ílhavo encompasses two cities: Gafanha da Nazaré and Ílhavo. In the locality of Barra, within the municipality of Ílhavo, there is the Barra Lighthouse, the highest of the 48 maritime lighthouses in Portugal. The lighthouse and Barra beach are part of the Gafanha da Nazaré parish. The Costa Nova do Prado also integrates the Gafanha da Encarnação parish. The Costa Nova do Prado beach is also one of the best locations in the municipality, and is a must-visit for anyone passing through the area. The typical houses on this beach (known as Palheiros) are characterized by facades (originally made of wood, currently made of concrete), painted with bright and cheerful colors, alternating with white. The city of Ílhavo is also known for the famous Vale de Ílhavo bread, made in the locality of Vale de Ílhavo, in an artisanal way and baked in a wood-fired oven. The Vale de Ílhavo bread has the most famous shape, but there is also the Folar or Sweet Bread (with or without eggs), sold during Easter.

Ílhavo is deeply linked to the fishing of cod; indeed, during the 20th century, most of the captains who made long-term voyages were from the then-village of Ílhavo. Many fishermen also came from neighboring localities.

These and other connections of Ílhavo with the sea can be seen at the Ílhavo Maritime Museum, which, in addition to the building, has the only side-by-side cod fishing boat that has survived. The boat is part of the museum and houses temporary exhibitions.

O navio faz parte integrante do Museu e alberga exposições temporárias.
